DJ wins the Cousy Award

Texas sophomore point guard D.J. Augustin was named winner of the 2008 Bob Cousy Award on Thursday, given annually to the nation’s top college point guard.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in conjunction with The Hartford Financial Services Group made the announcement.

Augustin was selected the winner from among 16 finalists that included Memphis’ Derrick Rose, UCLA’s Darren Collison and North Carolina’s Ty Lawson.

Cousy, a three-time All-American point guard at Holy Cross from 1948-50, won six NBA titles with the Boston Celtics from 1951-63. He will present Augustin with the award in San Antonio on Monday, site of this year’s Final Four.

“Leadership, vision and integrity are just a few of the traits that each of the finalists for this year’s award has demonstrated both on and off the court,” said John L. Doleva, president and CEO of the Naismith Hall of Fame.

A first-team Academic All-American, Augustin has earned first-team All-America honors from The Associated Press and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).

Augustin is one of five finalists for the John R. Wooden Award and the Oscar Robertson Trophy (USBWA National Player of the Year).
